Homestay turned Hostile…cont.

So, I realize it may be a bad move to blog about someone I live with…but the reality is I like her enough to feel like I can share the cultural experience that she has sparked. One of the girls we live with smokes. In Ghana smoking is a sign of being loose. If a man smokes, he is sketchy. If a woman smokes – that is really bad news. So, this girl goes and smokes at the end of our driveway which is adjacent to a car wash. The boys working at the car wash (working at the car wash, at the car wash yeah…) they are sketch smokers. So it has brought a little bit of embarrassment to the family here. It is interesting. Nana asked me if she respected me because I am older than she is and asked if I could talk to her. I am really enjoying learning more of this culture and I appreciated how the family name and respect is such a strong motivation for acting appropriately.
