FanMilk

I may have mentioned the genius of FanMilk before but let me expound. FanMilk is a company that makes milk products (as you may have deduced) The genius part is that they are packaged in plastic bags and peddled by men (I have yet to see a FanMilk woman) pushing a cooler/wheelbarrow apparatus down virtually every street, alley, driveway in Accra. All the while sounding their siren’s call – a bicycle horn. There is FanChoco – frozen chocolate milk – delicious, FanYogo – frozen strawberry yogurt – yum, and FanIce – frozen vanilla ice cream - sinful.
Perhaps my favorite FanMilk story involves a girl in Seth’s program. Rachel, naturally I love her because I have never met a Rachel I didn’t love and she goes to school in Oregon. However, she truly won me over after I realized her dedication to FanMilk. We were over at the other kids house for dinner. We had just finished a sumptuous meal of pasta and veggies (anything with veggies here is heavenly). All of the sudden Rachel, a professed “non-runner” (I believe the phrase was actually, “I don’t run.”) jumps up and says, “Did you hear that?” snatches her wallet and bolts out the front door. (She is of course followed by the rest of the house – we are all addicts ) Now,the fact that she even heard the FanMilk horn was amazing considering that the dining room is at the center of the house which has thick cement walls, is surrounded by a ten-foot wall and is a block away from the main street. However, it was even more amazing that by the time we got to the street, our non-runner friend was at least a quarter of a mile down the road and was not slowing down in her pursuit of the FanMilk man. (Insert milkman joke here.) When we did catch up to her she quickly barked out orders, “you and you, that way, we have to canvas the area.” Oh, the power of the FanChoco, only those under its spell truly know its pull.

That sounds much cooler than running after the overpriced ice cream man in the U.S. or Gavino's bus in Mexico.
