We went to Togo this last weekend. It was amazing! The food was so good – croissants and paistries, baguette sandwiches with avocado and lentils and the FanMilk products over there are better too! The city is only about 600,000 which is a nice change from the 5 million plus in Accra. The city is obviously planned out with paved sidewalks, covered sewage, and large trees lining the major streets. It was so nice. The people were mellow too, they didn’t hassle us at all and nobody called us Obruni. It was a little inconvenient that we don’t speak French. I am definitely taking a French class next term. I went to a fetish market which is where people buy all the animal parts to make their voodoo potions. It was interesting and stinky oh, and the guide assured us that all of the animals die naturally - hmm. We walked through the gran marche, checked out a cathedral, ate fan yogo’s and rode motor taxis all over Lome the capital – dangerous I know but then again, so is taking an infant to Africa
It has been interesting listening to all the international development students I live with (seth included) they pointed out the difference between the direct and indirect approach to colonization. The French used the direct approach meaning that they sent leaders and governors from France to their colonies (Togo included). The British used the indirect method, appointing local governors and leaders from the people in their colonies (Ghana). Having seen both capital cities, it is very evident that those who planned Lome had seen what a capital city, or any city should look like – this is not to discredit Ghana – I love Ghana too, but how is the chief of a village suppose to know how to plan an entire city?
Anyway, Togo = awesome!

I especially loved the picture of Tommy hanging out riding the taxi with Caroline. Oh boy is he going to struggle being in a car seat! I'm getting SO excited to see you all!
