Today I took Thomas to the dollar store with his little money bag full of $1.03. This was his first real shopping experience. As we approached the toy aisle he snagged the first thing he saw and said he wanted to get it; a toy bat, he has never played baseball. I encouraged him to check out all of the options in front of him and then choose. He did surprisingly well with this freedom. He spent about 15 minutes deciding and it really came down to a three-way tie: a fake pirate hook, a princess wand (in his defense, it did look like a sword) and a doctor kit. In the end he chose the doctor kit so he can fix his animals. He was particularly reassured by his choice when I pointed out the little instrument used to hit your knee to check your reflexes.
As we were about to go pay he said, "wait, mom, you need these princess things." I said, "oh, thats okay, I already have some princess things and you only have enough money to buy one thing." To which he responded, "You don't have any princess things like these (darn, he caught my lie). Mom, you need princess things because you are my princess." I looked down at my sweet little cowboy/doctor/animal rescuer...I am so grateful for moments like that! I am also grateful he didn't push it any further and decided to get himself his doctor kit. Whew, I did not want to be waddling around the house in a plastic tiara!

That is priceless.... although I would love to see a waddling princess!
I miss you guys so much. That is such a sweet story about such a sweet boy.
So sweet! Do you guys give him an allowance? We're considering doing this for M, so she can learn about saving and spending money.
So glad you've recorded that moment! What a darling boy.
